For its size, West Virginia offers astonishing fishing variety – trophy muskie in mountain reservoirs, smallmouth bass in clear gorge lakes, walleye and largemouth across the state, and cold-water trout in high lakes and tailwaters. This guide breaks down the species, the best lakes for each, and how to fish the Mountain State. Every lake links to a full guide in our West Virginia Lakes Database.

Muskie

West Virginia is serious muskie country. Stonecoal Lake and Burnsville Lake are among the best muskellunge waters in the state, with Cheat Lake and Sutton Lake close behind.

Smallmouth & largemouth bass

The clear, rocky reservoirs grow excellent smallmouthSummersville and Bluestone lead the way, the latter on legendary New River water. For largemouth, Stonewall Jackson Lake, Beech Fork and Mount Storm (year-round, thanks to its warm water) are top picks.

Walleye

Walleye thrive in many of the bigger reservoirs – Stonecoal, Sutton, Bluestone and Jennings Randolph all hold good populations.

Trout

West Virginia stocks trout heavily. High mountain lakes like Spruce Knob Lake and Summit Lake offer cold-water trout fishing, the deep Jennings Randolph Lake even holds lake trout, and the tailwaters below dams like Summersville and Tygart are stocked trout fisheries. A trout stamp is required.

Panfish & catfish

Crappie, bluegill and channel catfish fill out nearly every lake in the state – the small WMA and state-park lakes like Teter Creek and Big Ditch are great for family panfishing.

Licenses and rules

Anglers need a West Virginia fishing license from the Division of Natural Resources, plus a trout stamp to fish for or possess trout. Border lakes shared with Maryland (Jennings Randolph) have their own rules – check reciprocity. Always confirm current size and creel limits, especially for muskie.
