Stonewall Jackson Lake is central West Virginia’s resort lake – a 2,650-acre reservoir on the West Fork River wrapped around the upscale Stonewall Resort State Park, with a lakeside lodge, an Arnold Palmer golf course, a full marina and some of the best largemouth bass and muskie fishing in the region. Just off I-79 near Weston, it’s the most polished lake getaway in the state and an easy escape from anywhere in the central highlands.

Stonewall Resort State Park

The lake’s signature is the Stonewall Resort – a lakeside lodge with rooms, cottages, a conference center, restaurants and a spa, plus the Arnold Palmer Signature golf course “Stonewall,” a marina with boat rentals, a swimming area and trails. It’s a rare full-service resort wrapped around a West Virginia lake, popular for weddings, conferences and family getaways as much as for fishing. The surrounding Stonewall Jackson Lake State Park adds campgrounds and boat access.

Stonewall is one of the better fishing lakes in central West Virginia:

  • Largemouth bass – the headliner, with abundant cover, coves and standing timber that grow a strong bass population.
  • Muskie – the lake is a noted muskellunge fishery.
  • Walleye, crappie, channel catfish and bluegill round out the catch.

A West Virginia fishing license is required. The many creek arms, points and flooded timber give anglers endless structure to work.

Boating and recreation

With a full marina and rentals, Stonewall is excellent for pontooning, kayaking, fishing and lake cruising, and the resort’s beach and trails round out the experience. The lake’s protected coves and long arms make for calm, scenic paddling, while the resort side offers golf, dining and lodging – a genuine four-season destination.

Getting there and what’s nearby

Stonewall Jackson Lake is just off I-79 near Roanoke and Weston, about 40 minutes south of Clarksburg and 1.5 hours northeast of Charleston. The historic Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston and the Mountain Lakes region are nearby.
